Europe’s first carbon-negative biorefinery

Project INDEPENDENT started its activities in 2021 on Boğaziçi University’s Saritepe Campus, which has been carbon-neutral since 2015, and it is the first carbon-negative biorefinery in Europe by providing an annual capacity of approximately 1,200 tons of carbon dioxide capture and utilization.

With the introduction of algae-based alternative products in the energy, food, health, environment, agriculture and livestock sectors, double-gain sustainability is achieved by saving all the resources spent on fossil energy in production.
